Daily Source Code #545 mentions GPS and N800

Dear lazyweb, how hard is it to make Adam Curry who ponders Nokia N800, GPS and some clever code to find out about Geoclue? (hi! :) good show!)

Some minor updates..

I did some minor updates to the Plankton theme yesterday.

  • The topright corner's black blob is gone from the "home" view - yes, it was a bug, not some weird artistic brain fart of mine. ;-)
  • The buttons are much lighter in appearance - I want to do a very clean, simple theme that works.
  • The theme is now dithered to 32000 colors, so it has less banding on the blue gradient in the task navigator and statusbar panels.
  • The virtual thumb keyboard is cleaner (in progress, I know it has some pixel glitches) - the goal is to make it very easy to type with - hence the very prominent pressed-state of buttons and the clean appearance. Let me know if it helps - I think it does.
  • Some other crap perhaps that I forgot.

Grab it here. You need hildon-theme-cacher from here to install it. N800 only for now.

New maemo development theme

Finally I have more or less finished my new theme for the Nokia N800.

I hope to replace the old purple maemo platform development theme with this one. The template is in svn, I hope I committed it on the correct place, as Michael was moving stuff around when they were refactoring the theme packaging a bit. In any case, it's there and if you feel like hacking on a new theme of your own, there's also an Inkscape svg file you might find useful, in the same svn tree.
Oh, it looks like this:

Meet "plankton", the theme!

It's still not perfect, as you can easily see, but I'll try to tweak the remaining bits when I can. But I feel it's good enough at this point. And hopefully it makes N800 users happy, with new look? Let me know if you like it..

Edit: DOH. Forgot to tell the packages are here. Install cacher first, the theme depends on it. (It generates some gtkrc cache that speeds things up when starting applications..)

iPod and Ubuntu Edgy

If you decided to give the heck on what Steve says on his keynote soon, and got a nice iPod nano, and horror of horrors, Linux doesnt make it work out of the box immediately like it does for the older iPods, check out this patch and instructions to build yourself a new HAL.

Ari Jaaksi’s Blog

Ari Jaaksi of maemo.org and Nokia wrote an interesting blog entry yesterday, I thought I'd share with you who don't read planet maemo..

"I'd like a true operating system (Linux) and advanced middleware (GTK, Gnome, DBUS, ….) power new exciting connected mobile devices. I want to use the devices and their software as innovation platforms and want to create something new; not just re-implement something that has already been done. And yes, you are able to talk, see, hear and communicate through these devices but they are not your old cell phones. They are something else!

(answering the endless question about why the Nokia 770 is not a cellular phone) Check out the whole post.

Links for today

I love del.icio.us. Seriously. Try searching google for "free fonts" and you get the same crap on every "10000000000000000000+1 free fonts!!!" -site. They all suck.

Try the same on del.icio.us: This and this. Smooch!

Accidental art?

rock painting of a horse skull?

Last week I was riding the bus to work.. and I looked at the back window.

I first thought there was an ad of some tribal art exhibition in a museum, as there clearly was an image of a horse or cow skull staring at me.

But another look revealed it was nothing like that. Yes, it was an advertisement sticker, but the image was in the back: the sticker had become partly loose, and soot and dirt had crept under it, creating this pretty incredible picture.. wow.
