UI orientation
Just because the rest of the N770 device UI is in landscape format, does not mean some apps shouldnt explore the vertical. EBook reading for example works nicely in portrait mode, holding the machine vertically. The same, as far as I understand, would work for the HP 48 emulator port where the UI was split in two columns, so the display is besides the buttons.
I think the form of the device would be better utilized like this, or?

(Yeah, it’s a mockup, and I think we could even make the buttons larger, to utilize the whole touchscreen area, so one can really use fingers to poke at the keys)

It sounds quite sensible !!! It is the natural way to use it in this case.

I agree that the portrait orientation would be better for the HP48 emulator. It would feel more natural if you already know the HP48 and it would be better for entering text because all letters would be together (instead of splitting the A-F keys).
By the way, I still have and I still use my good old HP48sx. If I remember correctly, I bought it in 1990. The display is getting old, but otherwise the calculator is still running fine.
