eek
I built my first ARM binary debian package today. Whee... It was a nasty hax0red version of the osso-terminal that used bitstream vera mono font (which I had to copy to /home/user/.fonts to make it available) and used green text over black - nice retro colour scheme
) - but it showed me my scratchbox cross compile system is now correctly set up and things work..
This kind of wannabe-l33th4x0rism might sound a bit strange for a user interface person and a graphics artist -- but I am convinced that knowing enough techie stuff when designing UI does indeed help. It's teamwork anyway, and having at least a bit of common language with developers does help wonders.
Weekend feels very good now that I work in a real office again.. Phew. It does make it easier to balance between work and free time. I find the "non-work-mode" easier to find now that I physically travel to and from work.
Random Thoughts again..
The Thinkpad X40 is no longer my WinXP email and calendar computer, but has ubuntu now. Nice. The T41 was sentenced to de*cough* enterprise groupware use as it has less memory and is slower. And the X40 is a lot nicer to carry around in my bag..
So hey. I want to write a tutorial on how to port an existing Gtk application to Maemo, from the user interface perspective, as I think we don't quite have that yet. I was thinking of something simple like Leafpad maybe? (Of course there's the included text editor in the 770 already) - another idea would be to port the gPodder podcast aggregator, as it is using python-gtk already and we apparently have python bindings.
Yet another idea would be to take a commandline tool, like castget, and do a nice schoolbook example of how to give it an user interface with gazpacho.. not sure yet. But something like that would be nice. Other ideas?
Why? Because I need to learn how the user interface design process works inside the company, and I want to help the community to be more "in line" with the styleguides and such people have internally. In other words, to make free software that works better in the handheld and hopefully continue the work we started in betterdesktop.org - to see if we can work on user interfaces in the open source community. It'll be interesting to see if that works out, and if so, how it will look like in practice.

Office Space..
It's nice to not work from home for a chance - but the downside is one gets soaked with a load of different kinds of germs while commuting to the office, which the immunity system has no recent experience with.. Thus.. I was sick, (in)conveniently over the weekend. Sore throat and cough is not fun.
I might try going to work again tomorrow, feeling a bit better now. And I want to do some more experiments in using the 770 as a podcast viewer. I got the 1GB mmc card now. While it's not an ipod and doesnt try to be one, it still fits "enough" to be useful - it looks like it could nicely fit a DVD worth of video encoded for the device. The cpu is not a screamer, so one needs to scale down and lower the bitrate. But it's still very nice to watch stuff on the go. New experience for me at least, as I never had a video ipod.
Some podcasts have been fun listening too - one nice one to entertain over the commute has been flight attendant Betty's stories.
OpenRAW.org survey
From the OpenRaw website: "OpenRAW is a Working Group of photographers and other people interested in advocating the open documentation of digital camera RAW files."
Basically they are a group of concerned photographers who believe that whatever your digital camera produces is your digital negative and you should have completely ownership and control of the data as you took the picture. And the data format of the files should be open and public knowledge so people can write better tools to convert and handle those files. I of course do agree with that.
Anyway, they have a survey on their website which you should fill in if you have an opinion in this issue.
My photos are my artwork. And I really hope I can choose the software I edit them with. I want to support innovation and freedom and thus I am very happy to use UFRaw - an excellent Gimp plugin and standalone tool. While I should help the author with the workflow and user interface someday when I have the time, it still does a heck of a good job, supporting tone curves and basically has everything I need to make nice post-processing on my pictures. And it comes by default in Ubuntu, so it's always there without extra effort
Video Encoding for the Nokia 770
I wanted to know how to optimize videos for watching them on the 770, and found a nice page on the Maemo Wiki that lists several examples. There's a nice purposedly made converter for this exact task (that I didn't try myself) and also two examples for using mencoder from Mplayer project.
Of course, now I want a huge MMC card.. argh
It'd be nice to fetch the Finnish morning TV news and watch them in the train, for example..
Again..

This is the Helsinki airport METAR weather forecast. Basically it says "Fine weather" but the temperature is back down to not-so-nice figures: -22ºC. Again... Sure, I can handle it, but it is not very enjoyable..
First days..
.. oh boy do I feel confused - new place, new people (though some friends I knew from before too, hi!
) and totally new ways to handle all practical things.
I don't yet know precisely what I will be doing here, but I suppose that's the way all new jobs are - there's the time when you are the "newbie" and just mainly look confused most of the time until things start to get more clear over time.
In any case, I am very excited, and It's fun to actually go to work again, after working from home for a number of years. And the stuff to work on is very exciting.
